An ode to mum-in-law

Can you believe it? All of these dishes are prepared by my mum-in-law alone. She will prepare a fabulous meal for us every time we go back.

I really appreciate what she has done for us. I am so touched because all the dishes are prepared using the best ingredients. For example, ‘kampong’ chicken (free-range chicken), peanut roots, fresh chilli sauce, and …

Steamed ‘Kampong’ chicken

Fried black pomfret

fresh chilli sauce with lime juice

Fried sweet potato leaves

Leek with prawn and tofu

Root of peanut plant with pork ribs soup

Do you know that is difficult to find ‘kampong’ chicken nowadays? They are more expensive, and only available at certain wet markets and not at supermarket. Just because she would like to prepare a dish, which is healthier, better flavour and better texture, she needs to go to a farther wet market and spend more money for it.

Do you know that is troublesome to prepare peanut roots with pork ribs soup? The roots are full of mud, you need a lot of effort to clean. But she is willing to do that just because she believes that the soup will bring us more ‘oomph’

Do you know… …

How deep the love I can feel from your dishes… …

Ah ma, I love you…

  1. What a sweet post! I'm very interested in that chicken. Do you have a recipe?? I hope one day my kids can say the same about me :)

  2. I've never seen root of the peanut plant used in a recipe before. What does it taste like? I've not seen them in the oriental markets here in the U.S.

Your mother-in-law looks like a great cook!

  3. Hi Diana,
Don't worry, as a great cook like you. One day, your sons will say the same about you. I would like to share the recipes with you. Please looking forward to my new post for the recipes, he he

    Hi SmartShop,
root of the peanut plant only used for the soup, it's quite popular in Asia. It's tasteless and can be found in the Asian wet market.

Yeah, my mother-in-law is a great cook, I have learnt a lot from her :)
